PTO Purchases Books for All Grades

BBE's Guided Reading Library receives much needed update!

Brazos Bend appreciates all the new books and new shelves we received from PTO. Over the years, we have had books lost, worn out from use, and some that are outdated. That is why we needed new books. We needed books that were new, bright, and kept our reader’s engaged. This will influence our students in many ways. It will give them a chance to read a variety of text, become better readers and they will become excited about reading. The Reading and Writing TEKS changed this year, which allowed our district to purchase a new reading adoption (Fountas and Pinnell). The adoption came with many different resources for the teachers and students. The Adoption is Amazing! It came with leveled guided reading books for all grade levels, with 108, 000 books. After receiving all the books, we realized we needed a place to store them. The PTO graciously stepped in and bought us 18 new bookshelves. What a relief! Brazos Bend would like to thank the PTO for supporting our readers and our future leaders.

PTO MEETING MINUTES Wednesday October 9, 2024 6.30PM In Attendance: Nicole Polit, Miguel Hernandez, Felicia Bolden, Emily Hickman, Yasmin Arslan, Courtney Border, Abhishek Shankar, Kevin Sayre, Sohini Tomar, Elizabeth Miceli, Tara Phillips, Janet Livesey, Joshua White, Yasmin Ansari White, Cyma Yousuf, Erin Grace, Lindsay Kulhanek 1.Call to order at 6.04pm 2.President/VP report: Spirit shirt update: Have sold a total of 391 - totally sold out of Y large. 3.Treasurer & financial officer: Largest collection last month was for class parties but Cyma needs to double check if that figure was added. $3,600 for spirit shirts, $40 for spirit items, $30 for sponsorships, $104 for yearbooks. Some outgoing funds for Meet the Teacher. $6,700 coming in. $5,700 outgoing. Petty cash sits there for in person payments, we keep a $200 float. Yasmin question – are we performing better than last year or not? Nicole answered – not a fair comparison just yet, but cautiously can say we are doing a little better this year. Budget discussion: September board meeting has been set for 10/23 to discuss the budget, which you can access on the PTO website if anyone wants to evaluate and bring their thoughts and comments. Cyma question – last year we had approx. $37,000 end of last year in the account, is that okay, how much of a cushion do we need or want and what could we spend that money on to benefit the school? Nicole answered – ideally 1 year operating expenses in case we can’t fundraise or another covid happens. We would have to look at what our bare minimum running costs are. We do have some excess funds right now so let’s get some ideas on what we could spend that money on. Collections are up, and spending is also up. Elizabeth M question – could we possibly spend some of that money on carts for kids in the junior classes who switch classes but then don’t switch back and therefore take headphones and other such items home every day. Lindsay K answered – 3rd graders do switch back so lots of items stay in their classrooms, 1st and 4th are different and don’t switch back, she will talk to the 1st grade teachers and PTO could possibly purchase carts or trays for those items to stay safe at school. 5.Approve Treasurer notes for August: There are not enough board members present to vote. 6. Approve Meeting minutes for September: There are not enough board members present to vote. 7.Calendar: OCTOBER Oct 18 – Fall Festival Oct 24 – Fall Picture Day: need to ask Ms Atkins if she needs parent volunteers Oct 25 – Coffee with the counselor @ 8.15am Oct 25 – Fort Bend Education Foundation: Sugar Shindig Event The campus with the most participation wins a prize & the most staff wins a prize Oct 29 – 3rd Grade musical Patriotic performance 6.00-7.00pm NOVEMBER Nov 1 – No School Nov 4 to 8 - Book Fair Nov 8 – Veterans Celebration Nov 13 – PTO Meeting @ 9.30am 8.Committee Remarks: Sponsorship: AZIN (email update) Membership: TARA 175 paid members, 139 families, 36 staff/teachers. Yasmin question – has Mrs Scholl nominated ambassadors to take photos and help with yearbook layout? Dr Bolden confirmed that yes ambassadors have been appointed and they are working on a schedule. 9.Volunteer Opportunities: Need some Friday popcorn helpers. Fall Festival station volunteers are required. Library support & Book Fair helpers are needed. 10. New Business: N/A 11.Principal & VP remarks: Dr Bolden – we are looking at all of the families in this community. There are lots of people with businesses and resources and we don’t know who they are and what they offer so we want to create a business directory a bulletin board in the cafeteria hallway advertising local families businesses. Who in our school community can be our plumber, beautician, hairdresser, mechanic etc. Dr Bolden wants to hear from us, how are we feeling, what’s going on? Yasmin question – Can it be part of campus or FBISD curriculum where the kids can learn Spanish. Maybe an outclass, run by parent volunteers, could we incorporate it like MA and JA as a free parent-led program in the classroom? And also behavior-wise her 1st grade son is struggling to always be on level 0 and sit still and be so quiet, feels like he can’t be a kid anymore, can anything be done? Dr Bolden will go over some transition lessons. Elizabeth question – still struggling with Schoology login. Mr Hernandez offered to do another tech training night. Dr Bolden – thank you, this year is feeling better, there are significantly less behavior issues, less bullying. Lindsay Kulhanek passed on thanks from the teachers to all of those who sorted and delivered the PBIS rewards. Miguel Hernandez is trying to secure a Global Vending book machine. The vendor is approved, just waiting on the contracts. Can pay for the books in the machine via earned tokens. Will refill the machine using our scholastic dollars earned during Book Fair. 12.Meeting adjourned at 6.47pm

Committee Remarks Sponsorship: AZIN we currently have 4 sponsors and always looking for more. Please send Azin your suggestions for local businesses who may be interested azinshabankareh@yahoo.com Membership: TARA last year we had a total of 151 students paid dues and 42 of 66 teachers/staff. This year we are at 129 students paid and 13 of 66 teachers/staff. Tara will be running a grade level contest next week (Sept 9-13) and provide prize (still to be confirmed like ice cream or popsicle party, extra recess, popcorn). Additionally there will be a contest for the teachers – whoever has paid by the end of the week will be entered into a raffle to win Gift Cards or something else. Emily suggested covering their lunch and recess as a prize too. Tara is waiting on the Teacher Leaders to respond to her on their preferences. Class Parties: MALHORIE The dates are Winter Party Dec 12 and EOY May 29. Currently only 92 students have paid for parties, still a few more to log. Malhorie will run an incentive contest to get more numbers in November. She has had some ideas but wants to see the final budget numbers before chasing leads and getting quotes. Nicole will check the website to see if payment confirmations can go directly to the PTO Parties email address so that none are getting missed. Program Development: Fat Boys was a huge success, thank you to Dr Bolden and Mrs Border for wonderful participation. Have not heard yet how much money was raised. Next Spirit night is Sept 12th at Raising Canes. Ways & Means: The Fall Festival date is set for Oct 18th, a committee has been put together and needs your help. Please see the Sign Up link on the Take Action page. Hospitality: EMILY Hospitality is mostly providing lunches for our wonderful teachers, the next one is Oct 15th. Mostly she does all the work however sometimes needs volunteers to help set up on the morning of. If you have any ideas or connections or suggestions on restaurants or dietary specialties/needs, please get in touch. Junior Achievement: JANA All JA kits are ready and in the PTO room. Once you have signed up Jana will send you an email with all the information you need to proceed, providing her phone number as well if you have any questions. It takes 5 sessions of either 30 or 45 minutes depending on grade level. This program teaches economics and ties in extremely well with the existing curriculum. Your first step will be to email the teachers to coordinate a time that works best for them. Make sure Jana is CC’d on those emails and update her with your session times. If you have done the online training you do not have to do it again. Masterpiece Art: SUE ELLEN. Sue Ellen is new! Her goal is to get volunteers, then will periodically email them to remind those who haven’t set up a time with the teachers to do so. Can Dr Bolden possibly include the SignUp genius link on one of her newsletters to make sure it reaches ALL parents. D.A.D.S: KEVIN The aim of Dads Are Doing Something is to increase the number of male/Dad figures around the school. All are welcome Grandads, uncles, big brothers, any local and involved male figure. Will be moving this year to some more group duty activities rather than individually, in case some are holding back due to hesitation about being alone in a room with kids. Such as 2-4 Dads take over car duty, 2-4 dads do lunch duty. Kevin is considering doing an extra Hamburger cookout lunch this year. Can all of us please talk to males/Dad figures we know and encourage them to get involved. Sue Ellen’s husband wants to participate. Malhorie asked about time commitment. Kevin answered that it is extremely flexible. Car mornings is approx. 45 mins. Lunch can be 30 mins to 3 hours. Whatever time you can spare. Field Day: the date has been set for April 4th, 2025 Yearbook: only task right now is to upload photos. 14. New Business - Spirit Shirts update: NICOLE. We have sold 356 shirts. Need XS and S sizes which are coming on Sept 11 and will be distributed shortly after. -Malhorie: we are still missing 2 Spirit Night checks from last year, she has been constantly chasing them up. Altitude should be writing their check this week. Space Cowboys may be another 2-3 weeks as they made a mistake on the first check. -Mrs Scholl: Coffee with the Counselor. The entire weeks theme is ‘Start with Hello’ to encourage building friendships. 15. Principal & VP Remarks Dr Bolden first asked Vice Principal to introduce herself. Courtney has transferred from a FBISD middle school, she is the PBIS system head (Positive Behavior Incentive System is the digital reward system to replace Champ Bucks) students can use their points to shop for items either in class or at home. Half items will be treasure box type things, half will be bigger things they can save for like pie the principal, raffle items, extra screen time etc. The store opens Sept 16. Dr Bolden remarks: - Open House is tomorrow, 2 sessions starting at 5pm. We are keeping an eye on the weather. - Schoology: please all join and sign up. Newsletter is posted on Friday afternoons, usually before 12pm, so check it then. - CPAC: lots of staff members are doing great work, we can nominate teachers & staff for outstanding work. - Goals: teachers participated in lots of summer PD and there is more coming up. Accountability rating – the raw data is in and we are estimated to be at an 87B. Many reasons why, our goal is to move back up to A status. She and the team are giving teachers regular feedback and support. Providing additional coaching to ensure EVERYONE is growing. PLC is a focus, small group instruction is very important for ELAR and Math. Mrs Scholl has already identified students who need extra help and support and setting goals for them. Students are accessing Schoology and all info to know what they’re leaning and working on is there. - 5th grade End of Year party: there are some great ideas already from parents, she will direct them to us to we can work together with them. Leticia and Jana will be involved. 16. Additional Remarks Dominga – her 5th grader told her that the female PE teacher/assistant played a song with offensive words to it and got all the class up twerking and she felt very uncomfortable, and this is inappropriate. Dr Bolden will get to the bottom of it. Elaine – she has noticed that some Walkers are getting lost on their way home after school, she has helped a number of them. Is there more we can do to ensure their safety, can we set up a support group/meeting to address this. 2nd grade and lower do currently need to be handed off to a known parent/guardian which is the attempt to address that issue. 17. Meeting adjourned at 11.15am.

Membership: Dominga discussed her experience with a parent and not happy with PTO, thinks they ask too much. We post $$ online every month and are very transparent. Yasmin, need to educate more that what makes a good school, is a good PTO. Jana: beginning of August, let’s campaign about PTO, what is it, what we do…. Possibly a monthly video, what did PTO do this month, what did we do with your donations this month. Mrs Scholl: instead of parents donating they can ask a community member to donate items. International families –should we have a Whatsapp group, like a broadcast channel, and only Admins send info/broadcast. Right now only approx 250 parents opening her emails. Emily suggests a solution. Take top 5 languages. As PTO we could appointment a language representative/ambassador. Class Parties: 89 students signed up JA: no update MA: not completed – Varghese remains. Hospitality update: feedback form from staff to tailor future meals to their preferences. Today PTO donated, box lunches to grab and go, final PTO lunch will be 5/24, a food truck for 2 hours. 7.Principal & VP Remarks - BBE has been in the spotlight this year…..teacher of the year, principal of the year, bilingual of the year, MR H spotlight librarian nomination, Mr H won UIL coach of the year. - Cheer team: other schools are commenting and noticing and want to know what we’re doing right. - More parent involvement for instruction, multicultural timeline (Yasmin & Cyma), reading to primary kids. 30 mins kids read to adult. Pre-K, KG and 1 st . If not enough parents then def for KG. Reading program. Nothing formal, teachers next year want to partner 5 th and KG kids for reading. High schoolers have off periods who need hours, could they come and help? - Restroom etiquette: if your kiddos see something, tell their teacher. Need to figure out who these kids are that are mucking around to get help. - Chats with a consultant: should be a blue ribbon school which is a lot of work. Dr Bolden is going to do some research and stuff over the summer, us too. Let’s put in the work and try and get that ribbon! Already doing a lot of the work. Wants to work on attendance. We are at 95.45% attendance. Every day counts., hits their funding, hits the district funding. Nicole: info from Mrs Bishop. 10AM attendance counts. Bring your doctor notes. Religious holiday Eid is excused, waived. 8.New Business Elizabeth M asked about a shade cover for the playground. We did not purchase because it was included in a FBisd bond that was approved so is supposed to happen. Also the playground was locked over the weekend, a sign posted with open hours. Is it open those hours? Dr Bolden will put in a work order to make sure the timer is set correctly so it can be open on the weekends. 9. Sierra: order your Edu-Kit before June 7 th . Nicole update, so far we have sold 24 kits, bulk delivered to the school before school starts, pick up, take home and label. Last chance 6/8- 21, costs extra $12.95. Mrs Scholl – families who can’t afford it. She creates kits with gently used stuff or new stuff not used. Can we do a drive at the beginning of the year, donation kit. Edu-kit offers donation thing so PTO obtains funds to help families who can’t afford it. Will set up a box under the table in the lobby. 10.
